V.I.P. – Virgin Island Project (Edu-Comic über Project Management)

Auch wenn man glaubt sein Projekt erfolgreich durchzuführen – schon eine kleine Analyse kann aufzeigen, dass Kosten höher sind als geplant, Ressourcen vermehrt eingesetzt werden, anstatt sie einzusparen, Projektteams zuweilen durch ständig wandelnde Ziele demotiviert werden und anstatt aus den eigenen Fehlern zu lernen, sie immer wieder aufs Neue begangen werden.

Es gibt Projekte, in denen all diese Dinge und mehr passieren – dies ist dann der Moment, in dem wir – die Amontis Consulting – gerufen werden und wir unseren Ansatz des modernen Projektmanagements einsetzen. Wir führen Projekt wieder in die richtige Richtung und unterstützen Unternehmen dabei, ihr tägliches Geschäft vorzubereiten, um erfolgreich in der Zukunft zu sein.

Die Kernelemente unserer Projektmanagement-Methodik sind nun in einem Comic illustriert worden. Auf humorvolle Art und Weise wird dem Leser dabei vermittelt, was beim Aufsetzen und der Durchführung eines Projektes beachtet werden soll. Der Leser begleitet das Projektteam aus unterschiedlichsten Charakteren und Nationalitäten vom „Day Zero“ bis zum erfolgreichen Abschluss des Projektes und durchlebt auf anschauliche Weise alle Phasen des Projektmanagements.

Das Edu-Comic ist in englischer Sprache geschrieben, um dem zunehmend internationalen Charakter strategischer Projekte zu entsprechen.

Rezension

Die Realität zeigt, dass Projekte meist strategisch ungenügend abgestimmt oder in ihren Ressourcen unzureichend unterstützt sind. Anhand einer neuen Hotelanlage auf den Virgin Islands werden hier die Grundlagen des Projektmanagements von einer anderen Seite aus betrachtet – humorvoll, spannend und anschaulich illustriert. Der Comic ist in englischer Sprache abgefasst und folgt methodisch den internationalen Standards, die durch das Project Management Institut, USA, definiert sind.

The Story behind V.I.P

One day in November 2002, Jean-Pierre, a Frenchman living in Germany for over 20 years, turned up with Ralf to meet Roland, managing partner of amontis consulting in Heidelberg. Ralf, now partner in charge of amontis‘ Competence Center Project Management, wanted to make one of his many dreams come true and produce a comic-strip. Surely influenced by his many years in Belgium, he believed that a professionally-made comics on project management would greatly enhance the understanding of modern project management.

Jean-Pierre, a member of the Competence Center and an old friend of Roland, knew of two good reasons to be enthusiastic about this idea :

• Firstly, Roland – French-Swiss by background – is a fan of comics and
• Secondly, because Roland believes that project management is a necessity when executing corporate strategies, he would be delighted to promote the marriage between project management and comics.

So there they sat down together and soon conjured up many ideas for pictures, allusions and posters to communicate their key messages. After this initial meeting, there was a long period of silence. It seemed that the concept was just one of many funny things that occur in communication with colleagues.

Six months later, Ralf raised the topic again. He found a good story based on Fun in the Sun, a text book for learning Business English. He convinced Linda, a German-American and the original author of Fun in the Sun, to let him use the material. Oddly enough, it was Linda who first persuaded Ralf to study Accelerated Learning. Linda adapted her text to the requirements of the Amontis Consulting project management standard based on the PMBOK^® Guide of Project Management Institute (PMI^®).

Then Ralf found another enthusiast, Michael, owner/ manager of the company Varia Design • Illustration, who saw the opportunity to develop his own style of comic drawing and illustrations. They embarked on a busy and very stimulating phase of production.

The quality of the edu-comic increased as the team reworked the story over and over again, going into a deeper level of meaning each time (and sometimes driving Michael a little bit crazy). The work went slowly because they had to keep putting it down to earn a living!

Finally, Michael presented a prototype: only 57 more versions to go. Nevertheless, it was a great day, worth a good bottle of champagne – naturally brut.

No doubt, this booklet will become much more than a guide to newcomers and professionals to modern project management. It has already inspired us to create a sequel on professional project management issues.
